There has been some good inputs in different threads on loot and drop% since R140 and I'm interested in the theory crafting for this. So I'm inviting a discussion about loot and drops and interested in other peoples observations. I am an engineering instructor as a second career so take my observations wearing those glasses.

I know all of this is theory so please don't take anything mentioned as fact, only educated observation.

Let me start with this. First; each mob, mini boss, main boss, has a specified number of possible drops. The drops appear to be in a Hexagonal pattern.

Although the pattern does not effect the total number of possible drops it does effect the maximum. Trash mobs are Tier 1; in other words, they have one possible drop, that will be put in the center Hex where they are standing. Mobs like Gorga, Sigris and some Mini-bosses are Tier-2. They can drop a maximum of 7 items. 1 for the center hex and one for each hex on the second tier ring around where they are standing. Bosses Like Khally, Mortis, Destructor are Tier-3. They can have a maximum number of 19 drops. One for each hex in the first 3 tiers.

Second, each hex has it's own loot table(list of items that can drop there). For trash mobs the loot table is well known. The highest probability is getting nothing, followed by coins and health spheres, but extends through World drop uniques with a small probability.

Third; each tier's loot table changes based on the boss. HOD knights are Tier-2, and the loot table for the center hex is modified for an extraordinary drop or higher. The second tier for their drops is standard trash-mob loot table. So, you could get 2 extraordinary or more. 1 from the center hex for sure, and another possible one from second tier. Although Mortis could have up to 19 drops, there is not 19 chances that he will drop a Mortis unique. From looking at pictures and personal observation, his uniques drop only from the center hex. But, I have seen pics of one of his uniques dropping AND another world unique. If anyone could verify they have received or seen pics of 2 mortis uniques dropping simultaneously, it would mean his uniques drop from tier one and two, and each kill you have 7 chances to get one.

Anyway ill stop there; looking for your experience to add to and/or define the above observations.

    SillySword and Darwarren like this.

I'm still processing the information, but it fits my observations.
    Many thanks!

Note: Some group members do get multiple Legendaries from Destructor, but they have Champion-level Stats and Aggro.
Also, some players get drops just for being in the map with their group, even if they do not battle the target. Some bosses require proximity to get a drop.
And kill speed is a factor as well; maybe the hex changes over time.
