I believe the gem that is 80+ is only when u have sails down, the 49+ is all the time

Partially Correct... The +49 speed gem gives speed untill you reach "damaged"

So when your sails go down you don't reap the bonus of 49 speed, the same goes when your sails are up and you don't get the 80 speed buff?

    Correct!

    Citrine Special Gem:

Increases your Speed by 80 points, when your Ship is burning or damaged.

    Topaz Special Gem:

Increases your Speed by 49 points, while your Ship has normal status (not attacked). So if you are sailing along minding your own business, it adds 49 to your speed.

How is 80 speed when damaged gonna be better than 49 with full speed, if u get ur sails down and ur playin defensive ur gonna get smashed either way, the 80 speed is not gonna help there, the 49 speed i would say is more beneficial since, atleast with burning ice ammo playing defensive gets really good, 1046 speed is really nice to have in general aswell.

Actually, in my humble opinion, I would use neither gem. With some players having as many as 400+ cannons, two shots would probably badly cripple you and make the gem worthless. Two other gems might be more to your liking: Aventurine
"Increases protection by 5% from Agwes Plates of Armor" or Amber
"5% damage against PvP". Either might be better, depending on your strategy. If you want more Elite Points, you might prefer Tiger Eye (10% ELP Bonus). Also check out these three gems:

    Beryl
Increases your findings by 10% from Treasure Chests ( a must have for treasure chest hunting..I have it on my second skin)

    Jadite
    Increases your Voodoo Amulets +30%

    Ammolite
Increases your Heal Action Item by 30%

P.S. If you get hit (and frozen) with burning ice ammo (which I use a lot on my faster enemies), the speed gems aren't going to be of much help! Especially if they are out of "Unstoppables" or "Blood of the Inya"!

The +80 Speed when your sails are down is quite a situational Gem, but one that can really turn the tide of a battle as I have seen plenty of times. This mainly comes into use in stack fights and map changing as opposed to a standing 1v1. The extra speed when your sails are down has given me the ability many times to drop the opponents HP to below half, and then be able to outspeed them greatly to get away when they would have otherwise sunk me. This can be the difference between you getting to a map-change or pulling out of enemy range in time to use rep staves and come back to the battle quickly.

I will say it is a lesser-used Gem, and is more suited towards skilled players who can use the slight increase in speed to turn the tide of a battle, so it is definitely not useless when in the right hands.

    Thanks,
    ~Des
